This Monday (24th) Brazil and Portugal signed an agreement that covers topics such as economic cooperation in the markets of the countries of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), development and internationalization of startups and promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises.

The memorandum was signed by the Brazilian Export Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) and by the Portuguese Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade (Aicep). According to the Brazilian government, the agreement aims to promote cooperation based on the principles of benefit, in addition to equality and mutual respect for full sovereignty, in accordance with current laws and regulations.

“Apex-Brasil and Aicep intend, together, to make efforts to develop initiatives to promote Portugal in Brazil and Brazil in Portugal, contributing to the growing internationalization of the respective companies and dynamization of bilateral investment trade flows, as well as cooperate in joint initiatives in third-party markets, namely in regions with which there is already a relevant economic relationship”, says a press release from Apex-Brasil.

The memorandum mentions three priority cooperation fronts:

– Actions to promote the development and internationalization of startups, whose entrepreneurship projects with high growth potential and technological base, identified in both countries, can be supported by investment programs and funds. “This mutual collaboration and the incentives created by the respective countries will allow Portuguese companies to develop their business in Brazil, as well as enable Brazilian companies to develop actions in Portugal and in the European market”.

– Actions to increase economic and commercial cooperation through institutional coordination, inter-agency, in the markets of the countries of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, through the sharing of information, good practices, capacity building and training actions and creation of measures that increase competitiveness and economic security for companies and entrepreneurs in both countries.

– Actions for the promotion and development of business between small and medium-sized companies in both countries, “since they represent a significant number of jobs”. Among these planned actions are the exchange of information on the Portuguese and Brazilian markets; the realization of webinars, lectures and seminars on opportunities in the Portuguese and European markets; face-to-face or virtual training and commercial promotion events; and holding face-to-face or virtual business roundtables.
