Retail sales projection for Mother’s Day drops 4.1%, says survey
FGV MBA professor and economist Carla Beni explains that the reduction in sales expectations for Mother’s Day can be strongly attributed to the degree of household debt.
“As families have a very high monthly commitment and the last default report, made in April, pointed to the greatest potential ever recorded historically, today we have 70 million defaulters, who are people who have stopped paying their bills and have already they have their name on Serasa. This averages 43% of the adult population over 18 years of age in Brazil. So, this commitment will certainly affect Mother’s Day sales,” he says.
Even with this forecast of a drop in sales volume, Bianca Vitória de Souza, 18 years old, an administrative assistant who lives in Águas Lingas (GO), says that she intends to present her mother and has even chosen what she will give. “Yes, I’m going to give my mom a gift on Sunday, it’s a really nice gift, she’s been asking me for a long time, which is a perfume. And so, I intended to spend a lot more on her, she even deserves it, but I don’t have all that money I intended to spend, so I gave her what she really needed and really wanted, “she says.
With the projection of a real reduction in sales, the hiring of temporary workers to meet the seasonal demand this year should be lower, reaching 21.95 thousand vacancies. Last year the total was 23.70 thousand vacancies. Regarding the average admission salary, the estimated value is BRL 1,667.50, that is, 7.2% above the average amount paid on the same date in 2022.
