Minas Gerais: state to conclude work on Ubá public jail, in Zona da Mata

Minas Gerais started construction work on the male prison unit in the city of Ubá, in the Zona da Mata. The works are linked to the government of Minas Gerais and the Department of Highways and the State Secretariat for Justice and Security (Sejusp). The prison unit has 6,000 square meters and 388 places in four blocks, collective and individual cells, with bathrooms and bunk beds, an area for intimate meetings and classrooms and computer rooms.

The director of building and infrastructure work at DER-MG, Debora Dias do Carmo, explains the importance of this work that is underway and that the objective is to improve the safety of the population.

“The work for the region is extremely important as it improves the entire structure of the city, providing more security for the municipality and region, in addition to creating local jobs. About 22 million reais have already been invested in the work, the work is 90% complete, in addition, access will be made possible to guarantee greater security and mobility to the surroundings. This second stage provides for an initial investment of 2.3 million and the completion of the project as a whole is expected in the first half of 2024,” he points out.

The works began in June 2015 and went through several stoppages, until they were resumed in May 2019. In this first stage, completed in 2022, 90% of the works were completed with an investment of 22.3 million.

According to the Federal Government, through Caixa Econômica Federal and the National Development Bank (BNDES), 2.3 million reais will be invested in resources for the State of Minas Gerais. The forecast for completion of the work is for the first half of 2024.
