Slaughter of cattle, pigs and chickens increases in the third quarter of 2024

Cattle slaughter rose 14.8% in the third quarter of 2024, compared to the same period last year. Compared to the second quarter of this year, the increase was 3.7%. The data are from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Pig slaughter increased by 1.9% compared to the same period in 2023, while chicken slaughter increased by 2.7%. In relation to the second quarter of 2024, pig slaughter increased by 2.4% and chicken slaughter increased by 0.9%.

According to IBGE, in the third quarter of this year, 10.33 million heads of cattle were slaughtered under some type of health inspection service. As for pigs, 14.92 million animals were slaughtered in the same period. In relation to chicken, in the third quarter of 2024, 1.62 billion birds were slaughtered.

Also according to IBGE, in the third quarter of 2024 the acquisition of raw milk reached 6.28 billion liters. The quantity represents a reduction of 0.6% compared to the volume recorded in the same period last year and an increase of 7.7% compared to the immediately previous quarter.

The survey also shows that the acquisition of leather pieces by tanneries registered an increase of 15.1% compared to the third quarter of 2023 and an increase of 2.6% compared to the second quarter of this year.

Regarding chicken eggs, in the third quarter of 2024, 1.18 billion dozen were produced. The result represents a 9% jump compared to the same period last year and a 2% increase compared to the second quarter of this year.
