2024 elections: União Brasil and PL elected the majority of mayors in the 100 richest cities in agriculture
Acronyms with a more left-leaning political profile, such as PT and PSB, elected few mayors, just 2 each, in this first round of voting. The Republicans, in turn, elected 8, while the PDS, 4.
In relation to cities with an economic weight more focused on agribusiness, political scientist Eduardo Grin assesses that, historically, the electorate tends to vote for those who present proposals more aligned with the center-right wing, which is why, according to him, this scenario is so common.
“The fact that they are candidates linked to the “centrão” parties, such as PSD, PL and MDB, in general, does not surprise me. If we look, they are cities linked to agribusiness. This means that these parties have more links with the business world than those on the left. It is very difficult for left-wing parties to break this understanding of the world. Of course, there are candidacies from PSOL and PT, but they, in many cities, have more difficulty penetrating this type of electorate”, he highlights.
União was successful in cities such as Sorriso (MT) – which has an agricultural production value estimated at around R$8 million – and in Diamantino, in the same state, which has an agricultural production value of approximately R$5 million.

In general, taking into account the more than 5 thousand Brazilian municipalities, the MBD lost space to the PSD in this year’s elections. The center party secured 888 city halls in the first round, an increase compared to 2020, when 659 municipalities were managed by mayors from the party.
Data from the Superior Electoral Court also shows that, despite losing leadership in the number of city halls won, the MDB grew in relation to the last election, going from 790 to 865 elected mayors. And securing second place among the subtitles.
