Billion-dollar cities: 92 municipalities have revenues above R$1 billion; check out the ranking

Survey carried out by the portal Brazil 61 shows that Brazil has 92 billion-dollar cities, distributed among the country’s five regions. The data is for the year 2021 – the most recent available. These municipalities account for more than a third of the Brazilian population and have a global budget of R$344.3 billion.
The state with the largest number of billionaire cities is São Paulo, with a total of 29. In the entire Southeast, there are 46 municipalities in this condition. Among them is Barueri, located in the western region of Greater São Paulo. According to the local town hallthe municipality’s economic strength, in industrial aspects, is concentrated in areas of Alphaville, Tamboré, Engenho Novo, Jardim Califórnia, among others.
Already information made available by Sebrae indicate that, in 2022, the economic sectors that brought together the most workers in the municipality were Office Services, Administrative Support and Other Services Provided Mainly to Companies (58,108), Information Technology Service Activities (30,985), and Services for Buildings and Landscaping Activities (24,912).
Midwest
The Central-West region, which has 7 billion-dollar municipalities, has as one of its highlights the municipality of Rio Verde (GO). According to information provided by the government of Goiás, it is one of the main economies in the state, with a pillar more focused on agribusiness, especially agro-industries.
The city is a leader in grain production and is among the main exporters of Goiás, in terms of value. In addition, the Commerce and Services sectors are also well developed in Rio Verde, with shopping malls, stores, leisure facilities, craft fairs, bars and restaurants, among other activities.
Municipalities in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul also appear on the list, such as the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul (R$4,377,631,757.86) and the capital of Mato Grosso, Cuiabá (R$3,059,625,469.51).
ON THE
In the South of Brazil, the three states have billion-dollar cities, including Balneário Camboriú, in Santa Catarina. Strong in the tourism sector, the city received almost 592 thousand visitors in January 2024 alone. According to the Ministry of Tourismthe city is among the main destinations in the country.
Already information from Fecomércio indicate that the 2023/24 Summer Survey shows a 4.7% increase in the number of tourists on excursions. In Santa Catarina, Balneário Camboriú was among the most sought-after destinations by foreign tourists.
NORTH EAST
In the Northeast region, where 13 billion-dollar municipalities are located, the city of Campina Grande, in Paraíba, stands out among the highlights. Located in the Paraíba hinterland, the city has the second largest GDP in the state.
In 2021, revenues jumped by 2.9%, reaching R$10.373 billion. The entity accounted for the second largest share in the Istate industryin 2021, with 19.5%. The result was driven, above all, by the manufacturing industry, with an increase in local units manufacturing beverages (100%) and textile products (5.6%).
NORTE
In the North region, where 9 cities are among the billionaires, one of the highlights is Marabá, located in the southeast of Pará. With an estimated population of approximately 270 thousand inhabitants, the municipality has an economic strength more focused on agribusiness, since the GDP of the sector, in 2021, was almost R$ 609 million.
It is worth noting that industrial activity also stands out. According to the Pará Economic Development Company (CODEC)the Marabá Industrial District has more than 50 companies installed in an area of approximately 4,260 hectares, divided between Phases I, II and the Processing and Export Zone (ZPE).
Public budget specialist Cesar Lima highlights the importance of these cities for the country’s economy.
“These municipalities currently represent 4% of Brazil’s GDP. And the number of these municipalities has been growing. In 2018, we had 65 municipalities that collected over one billion reais. In 2019, 71. In 2020, 82. And we went to 92, demonstrating an improvement in the economy.”
