Camex maintains increase in import tariffs on solid waste
The Executive Management Committee (Gecex) of the Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex) has decided to maintain import tariffs for paper, plastic and glass waste at 18% for another year. The tariff has been the same since July 2023 and, according to a note from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), the measure taken last year had an impact by reducing imports of this waste.
According to the ministry, from August 2023 to May this year, imports of paper waste fell by 48.3% and plastics fell by 33%, which contributed to the national recycling market. Most of the imported waste comes from countries outside Mercosur. The 18% rate was due to expire on July 31. The ministry also reported that the extension ensures that the measure covers all types of relevant paper, plastic and glass waste.
