Brazil has once again registered a positive balance in opening companies, with a record 5.7 million active companies in 2021. One of the highlights was Amazonas, which registered 42,665 active companies. The data are from the Central Register of Companies (CEMPRE) for 2021, released last Wednesday (21), by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

In 2021, the number of companies and other active organizations grew by 4.3% compared to 2020, with 1,700 more local units. Within these companies, approximately 697 thousand people were employed in 2021, which represents a growth of 7.5% compared to 2020 (648 thousand people employed). During this period, there was an increase of around 46,000 people with formal employment, an increase of 7.6%.

Economist César Bergo explains that 2021 recorded positive numbers compared to 2020 because there was already greater control of the coronavirus pandemic, and the development of the vaccine. “There was then an important increase in the number of companies, some of them introducing new ways of working. What also helped a lot was the labor reform and the possibility for self-employed workers to become individual micro-entrepreneurs”, he assesses.

trade and tourism

Bergo explains that in regional terms, the North of Brazil was one of those that grew the most in this period, around 6%. According to him, Amazonas has a small number of cities and economic hubs, and the biggest highlight is Manaus, with many industries and strong trade.

“In Amazonas we have the provision of services in the electronics area, the question of a trade to support all this activity. And there is no doubt that bars, restaurants, hotels also ended up resuming activities, especially due to the important tourism segment”, points out the economist.

Wage

In 2021, Amazonas maintained the mark of 2.8 minimum wages, but recorded a drop in the average monthly salary, which went to R$ 3,058.43. The average reduction was 5.2% between 2020 and 2021. In 2020, the average monthly salary was BRL 3,224.77.

What is the Central Register of Companies (CEMPRE)

The Central Business Register is an IBGE database, which gathers registration information and economic activities of most companies and organizations that have the National Corporate Taxpayer Registry (CNPJ) registered with the Federal Revenue. This registry includes both public administration and non-profit/international companies and organizations.
