Conab estimates grain production at 315.8 million tons
Grain production in Brazil is expected to break a new record with 315.8 million tons in the 2022/2023 harvest. The forecast appears in the 9th Grain Harvest Survey, released this Tuesday (13), in Brasília, by the National Supply Company (Conab).

If the expectation is confirmed, it represents a growth of 15.8% in comparison with the harvest obtained in the previous cycle – or a higher volume of 43.2 million tons.

The area destined for planting shows growth of 4.8%, compared to the 2021/22 cycle, reaching 78.1 million hectares.

The biggest growth in the current cycle is that of soybean production, whose harvest is “practically finished”, according to Conab. It is estimated that the oilseed will reach a production of 155.7 million tons, a number that represents growth of 24% (increase of 30.2 million tons) compared to that obtained in the 2021/2022 cycle.

“Mato Grosso, the main producing state, registers a new record for this crop, with an estimated production of 45.6 million tons. Bahia is also a highlight with the highest productivity in the country with 4,020 kg/ha”, informed Conab.

According to Conab’s Crop Monitoring manager, Fabiano Vasconcellos, in these two cases the result is “a reflection of the good technological package and favorable weather conditions”.

corn and cotton

The expectation is that corn will also record record production, according to the survey. The forecast is for a harvest of 125.7 million tons of grain, adding the three cereal harvests throughout the cycle. If the expectation is confirmed, the volume to be harvested will be 11.1% above that produced in 2021/22, which represents an increase of 12.6 million tons.

“In the first grain harvest, the harvest is almost finished, with a production of 27.1 million tons. As for the second harvest, in the initial harvest phase, a production of 96.3 million tons is estimated”, highlighted Conab. According to Vasconcellos, weather conditions have been favorable for the development of the crop so far.

According to a survey by Conab, the second cotton crop is expected to harvest 2.98 million tons of lint alone. “The crops show good development, and the stages of apple formation and maturation predominate, with the harvest already started in areas of Bahia and Mato Grosso do Sul”, explains Conab.

Rice, beans and wheat

In the case of rice, the expectation is for a harvest close to 10 million tons, while for beans a production of around three million tons is expected, adding the three crops of the legume.

Among the winter crops, Conab highlights wheat, with a sown area that is already reaching 46.9% of the total forecast for the cereal – which means growth of 9.7% in the planted area, with the crop being able to reach 3.4 million hectares. The estimated production is 9.8 million tons.

international sales

“In this new survey, Conab maintained the projections for the 2022/23 crop supply table stable for the main products analyzed. With this, a record volume is still expected for international sales of corn and soybeans in the country”, informed the company.

Also according to Conab, the “good volumes” projected for production of corn and soybeans in Brazil allow for shipments of around 95.6 million tons for the oilseed and 48 million tons for the cereal.

“However, it is still necessary to be aware of some important external factors such as the North American crop, which can still be impacted by climate issues, as well as the demand of the Chinese market and the possibility of a global recession, among other factors that affect the prices and the demand for the products”, observed the manager of Economic Studies, Statistics and Agricultural Policy at Conab, Allan Silveira.
