The Household Consumption Intention (ICF) increased by 3.1% in April, compared to the previous month. Measured monthly by the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), the index is now at 97.1 points, the highest since March 2020.

The research indicates, therefore, that the Brazilian started the second quarter of this year more willing to consume.

The index is measured to project the sales potential of the trade. It is obtained from the calculation of seven indicators: current employment, current income, consumption level, professional perspective, consumption perspective, access to credit and time to acquire durable goods.

When it is below 100 points, the ICF indicates consumer dissatisfaction. Between 100 and 200 points indicates satisfaction. The April result, despite being below the desired line, is seen as positive data for José Roberto Tadros, president of the CNC.

“With the decrease in inflation exceeding expectations at the end of the first quarter, in which budgets were committed to seasonal expenses such as paying taxes, buying school supplies and vacations, for example, consumers start the second quarter of 2023 with the disposition renewed for consumption.”

Inflation, mentioned by the president of the CNC, surprised positively in March. The annual Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) was 4.65%, below market expectations and within the Central Bank’s target (4.75%).

Among lower-income families, there was also a 3% growth rate in consumption intention, with an ICF of 94.5 points. For those who earn more than 10 minimum wages, the index was 110.8 points, a monthly variation of 3.4%. In the analysis by gender, the highlight is the growth of optimism among women. The rate rose 29.4%, while purchase intention among men increased by 21.9%.

“With more women entering formal employment since last year, their perception of job security and income has also improved”, analyzes the person responsible for the survey, economist Izis Ferreira.

employment and income

Of the 18,000 people interviewed by the CNC through questionnaires, 36% considered their current income better than a year ago. The percentage is the highest in three years. The index that assesses current income stood at 114.7 points, the highest level since before the pandemic. With regard to satisfaction with the job, the result was 124.4 points, 1.3% above the registered in the month of March.
