Debt renegotiation effort will be in the second half of July

The National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon), of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, will carry out, in the second half of July, the national effort to renegotiate debts for the payment of consumer debts. The announcement was made by the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, this Thursday (22nd), in Brasília.

This will be the first of the joint efforts that should be periodic, as provided for in the decree 11,567signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on Monday (19). the decree raised the value of the minimum existential monthly income from R$ 303 to R$ 600 for over-indebted people, who are people who cannot pay their debts and maintain the minimum to survive.

The purpose of the measure is to protect these over-indebted consumers so that the minimum necessary for the payment of basic expenses, such as water and electricity, is not compromised.

Flávio Dino believes that the decree will have a positive effect. “Based on the new decree edited by President Lula, we believe that the interest of the over-indebted in seeking the Procons and justice will be increased”, he said. Procon is a public body for consumer protection, which is part of one of the axes of the National Consumer Protection System.

The minister also pointed out that creditor companies must participate in debt renegotiation efforts organized by Senacon.

“The participation of creditors is mandatory. It is not a possibility, it is an obligation. Creditors, once summoned by the courts or by Procon, are obliged to participate, under penalty of arbitration of this new payment plan, always preserving the existential minimum, which was previously R$ 303 and is now R$ 600, thus improving the protection of the basic rights of citizens”, he explained.
