Electricity: yellow flag is activated and generates relief on the electricity bill

The yellow flag on electricity bills came into force this Friday (1st). In the months of September and October, prices were defined based on the red flag, considered more expensive. From now on, the extra amount charged for every 100 kWh consumed goes from R$7.87 to R$1.88.

According to the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel)the exchange of the red flag for the yellow flag occurred due to the increase in the volume of rain recorded in the last month.

With the drought noted in the North of Brazil, hydroelectric plants generate less energy. In this case, to meet peak consumption times and low generation of renewable energy, it is necessary to activate thermoelectric plants, which are more expensive. This leads to an increase in the price of the electricity bill.

The increase in the cost of electricity in the country even contributed to the increase in inflation in September. According to information from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Broad Consumer Price Index that month showed an increase of 0.44%.

Each tariff flag has a specification. When the green light is activated, it means that the conditions for energy generation are favorable and there is no extra cost. The yellow flag means that the situation has become less favorable and there is an additional cost of R$1.88 for every 100kWh. The red flag is triggered when the situation becomes unfavorable and the additional cost can reach R$7.87 for every 100 kWh.
