Forgotten money: around R$8.5 billion had not yet been redeemed by June, according to the Central Bank

Around R$8.5 billion in funds forgotten by Brazilians in the financial system had not yet been withdrawn by the end of June, according to the Central Bank in a report released this week.

To date, the System of Receivables (SVR) has returned R$7.4 billion of the R$15.9 billion to which Brazilians are entitled.

Through this system, citizens can check whether they, their company or someone they have recently passed away has money forgotten in a bank, consortium or other institution. If they have money to receive, they can request a withdrawal.

More than 20.1 million people and 1.5 million companies have already withdrawn forgotten money through the SVR. However, around 41.2 million Brazilians and 3.4 million legal entities have not yet made the withdrawal.

Inflation, debt and more profitable investment alternatives may explain the withdrawal of money from savings in July
