Government launches National Campaign for the Prevention of Accidents at Work

The campaign will run from April to December across the country, with events to raise awareness of civil society, employers and employees about safety precautions to prevent accidents and occupational diseases.

When launching the initiative, the Minister of Labor, Luiz Marinho, stressed this year’s focus on workers’ mental health. He highlighted that psychic illnesses can affect any type of professional and gave domestic workers as an example. “We know it’s exhausting work, but we need to work so that it doesn’t become degrading work,” he said.

According to data from the Ministry of Labor, between 2002 and 2021 there were more than 600,000 accidents at work in Brazil, of which 2,591 resulted in deaths and 9,419 in some permanent physical disability. “Faced with these numbers, we need to work,” said Marinho.

According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), the world loses 4% of its entire Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a result of accidents and occupational diseases. Considering the planetary GDP of 2022, this loss approaches BRL 400 billion.
