In 2022, the elderly population was 10.5% of the country’s total
The population aged 65 or over in Brazil accounted for 10.5% of the total in 2022, according to data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD), released this Friday (15th), in Rio de Janeiro, by the Instituto Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The study shows that, in ten years, there was an increase in the proportion of elderly people in the total population because, in 2012, the percentage was 7.7%.

The adult population between 30 and 64 years old also grew, from 42.4% in 2012 to 46.1%. On the other hand, the proportion of the younger population has decreased. Those between 18 and 29 years old increased from 20.9% to 18.7% of the inhabitants, while people under 18 years old decreased from 29% in 2012 to 24.6% in 2022.

“Observing the age pyramid of the Brazilian population, between 2012 and 2022, (note) the enlargement of the top (where the elderly are represented) and the narrowing of the base,” said IBGE researcher Gustavo Fonte.

Regions

Among the major regions, the North and Midwest increased their share in the total. The North rose from 8.3% in 2012 to 8.8% in 2022. The Midwest rose from 7.4% to 7.8%. The South maintained the proportion of 14.3%, while the Northeast (down from 27.7% to 27%) and Southeast (from 42.2% to 42.1%) had a decline in national participation.

Women accounted for 51.1% of the Brazilian population in 2022, while men accounted for 48.9%. That means there were 95.6 men for every woman in the country. Only in the North region did the male population outnumber the female, which meant that the ratio was 100.1 men to 100 women.

The regions with the lowest proportions between men and women were the Northeast (94.3 men for 100 women) and Southeast (94.4 for 100).

Regarding color or race, the proportion of people who declared themselves to be black rose from 7.4% in 2012 to 10.6% in 2022, while those who declared themselves to be white dropped from 46.3% to 42.8% in the period . Pardos, which were 45.6% in 2012, became 45.3% in 2022. A source points out that the population projection of this PNAD survey still does not take into account data from the 2022 Demographic Census. 2010.
