Industry is committed to neutralizing greenhouse gas emissions, says CNI

The president of the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), Robson Braga de Andrade, stated that the Brazilian industry has been adopting measures to reduce and offset the emissions of gases that cause the greenhouse effect. The statement was made during the opening speech of the Brazil-United Arab Emirates Economic Meeting, held at the CNI, this Thursday (15).

“Brazilian industry is committed to reducing and neutralizing greenhouse gas emissions to contribute to the global effort to prevent global warming. At COP28, we intend to present successful projects in the area of sustainability, actions we have taken in the Amazon to attract sustainable investments and projects that can inspire companies towards environmental conservation and the decarbonization of the economy”, he says.

The meeting was attended by the director general of the 28th Climate Conference (COP28) of the United Nations (UN), Majid Al Suwaidi, and the minister of International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates, Reem Al Hashemi, who is in Brazil leading your country’s delegation. According to the president of the CNI, in recent years Brazil and the United Arab Emirates have sought to strengthen ties in various sectors.

“The commitment of both countries to improve the business environment will certainly bring positive results to our bilateral trade relations. In this sense, the National Congress of Brazil approved two agreements: one for cooperation and mutual assistance in customs matters and another for facilitating investments between our agreements. They aim to expand trade and meet the needs of investors, offering legal guarantees and dispute resolution mechanisms,” he says.

The Minister of International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates highlighted the role of COP28 for a low-carbon economy. “I hope that our teams and our private sectors can think of COP 28 as a starting point for COP 30. This kind of action and climate finance and nature-based solutions, in an energy transition focused on fair process. And beyond governments, the private sector must drive us to this and we depend on you, your innovation, your sense of pragmatism and practicality, and your purpose-driven businesses,” she points out.

The president of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, Osmar Chohfi, expressed his expectations for the development of cooperation with business organizations at COP28. “Our expectation is also for a collaborative action between entities that want to join in order to bring a significant presence of the Brazilian business community in the context of this entire policy of seeking sustainable development and a green economy. An economy that can make good use of natural resources and, at the same time, there is a concern for the sustainability of this economic activity”, he says.

Sustainability Agenda and COP 28

Support for the sustainability agenda was the subject of a panel at the Brazil-UAE Economic Meeting. CNI’s executive manager for the Environment and Sustainability, Davi Bomtempo, explains that the panel addressed the main actions being carried out within the industrial decarbonization agenda.

“We showed our entire strategy, we talked about the energy transition, new technologies such as carbon capture, hydrogen, the expansion of renewable energies, the carbon market and the circular economy. We talked about forest conservation, highlighting the importance of the government in the command, control and inspection agenda, but also opening up opportunities for the private sector to contribute from the bioeconomy, that is, sustainably exploring biological resources in order to generate more and more income, wealth and development for that region of the biomes”, he points out.

According to the executive manager of Environment and Sustainability, until COP28, studies and activities are planned that should be part of the sustainability agenda. One of them is the holding of a Pre-COP, in September, with the aim of disclosing the positions of the industrial sector to the government, in order to assist in the negotiations of the Paris Agreement.

Bomtempo also pointed out that the CNI is working on a Decarbonization Plan for the Industrial Sector. “It is a strategy that is being designed and that will establish a goal of carbon neutrality and, more than that, will also show the need for funding, that is, how much will it cost to make a transition to those more intensive sectors and how that we need to face a professional training challenge for those who will receive this new green agenda”, he explains.

The 28th United Nations (UN) Climate Conference is scheduled to take place at the end of this year, starting on November 30, in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.
