Inflation accelerates in five of the seven capitals in the 2nd quadrissemana of March

The weekly consumer price index (IPC-S) accelerated in five of the seven surveyed capitals in the second four-week period of March. This is what the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV/Ibre) pointed out. The inflation indicator rose 0.61% in the period and has accumulated an increase of 3.90% in the last 12 months.

According to the FGV, the capitals that were discharged were:

  • São Paulo (from 0.44% to 0.53%)
  • Belo Horizonte (0.35% to 0.72%)
  • Porto Alegre (0.73% to 1.06%)
  • Brasilia (0.48% to 0.67%)
  • Salvador (from 0.33% to 0.34%).

The capitals Recife (from 0.56% to 0.43%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.35% to 0.32%) had a deceleration.

For economist Newton Marques, this is a sign that some services are still under pressure, but that it is not possible to pinpoint any cause, since this result is monthly.

“This is one of the indicators that there is pressure from some sectors, mainly transport. There is no longer that pressure from food as it has been happening, so prices are accommodating, as is also the case with education. At the beginning of the year, we can see that items related to education have also risen in price, so it is not possible to point out any trend”, said Marques.

Businesswoman and accountant Emanulle Silva explains that this variation should impact the final consumer, but believes that this acceleration is caused only by the beginning that every new government undergoes.

“I believe that this variation is not in relation to the government’s projections, I think it is precisely because of the first quarter of the new government, we experience uncertainty at the beginning of every government”, explained the accountant.

The next release of the IPC-S regional results will be on 04.11.2023.
