IPC-S: 4 of the 7 capitals in the index registered an acceleration in inflation
The Consumer Price Index – Weekly (IPC-S) for the second four weeks of May 2024 rose 0.64%, accumulating an increase of 4.07% in the last 12 months, according to Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV).

For economist Cesar Bergo, it is clear that the weather phenomena and natural disasters that occurred in the south of the country have a decisive influence on prices, especially food. He points out that in the calculation, five of the eight groups that make up the IPC-S registered an increase, with emphasis on food and housing.

Bergo also adds that four of the seven capitals surveyed registered an increase in their rates of variation, namely: Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro.

“From a practical point of view, the capital that presented the most negative performance was Porto Alegre, due to the (climatic) events, but prices rose by 1.2%, followed by São Paulo, which also rose significantly, by 0.7%. %”, highlights.

See the percentage changes per month until June 7th:

  • Rio de Janeiro: 0.40
  • Belo Horizonte: 0.43
  • Recife: 0,08
  • São Paulo: 0.71
  • Salvador: 0,29
  • Brasilia: 0.52
  • Porto Alegre: 1.22

Expectations

The economist reports that the trend for the coming months is that food will continue to put pressure on inflation.

“Especially those products that are produced in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, such as rice, and also other aspects related to logistics and distribution. Housing products continue to be under pressure”, he adds.

He highlights that next week’s result will be decisive for future expectations of the IPC-S.
