IRPF 2024: Open consultation for the largest batch of refunds
Starting this Thursday (23), the largest batch of 2024 Personal Income Tax (IRPF) refunds will be available for consultation. In total, 5,562,065 taxpayers will receive R$9.5 billion. Payment of the amounts for this first batch, which includes priority groups, will be on May 31st. The information was released by the Federal Revenue Service.

In addition to this year’s declarations, the batch also includes residual refunds from previous tax years.

With the state of calamity declared in Rio Grande do Sul, a priority was established for taxpayers who live in the state. Thus, in RS, 886,260 declarations will be refunded, including previous tax periods, totaling more than 1 billion reais.

According to the Federal Revenue Service, the priority groups for the first batch are:

  • “258,877 elderly people over 80 years old;
  • 2,595,933 taxpayers between 60 and 79 years old;
  • 162,902 taxpayers with some physical or mental disability or serious illness;
  • 1,105,772 taxpayers whose largest source of income is teaching;
  • 787,747 taxpayers who received priority for using the pre-filled declaration or choosing to receive the refund via Pix.”

Adriano Morocco, advisor to the Federal Accounting Council (CFC) and coordinator of the National Personal Income Tax Commission, explains that throughout the year, taxpayers pay their Income Tax, and the monthly payment is an advance of the effective amount that It is adjusted annually at the time of declaration.

“So it turns out that some pay less than they should and therefore need to supplement, and other taxpayers paid more than they should — and therefore receive the excess back”, he informs.

Asafe Gonçalves, managing partner of Asafe Gonçalves Advogados and specialist in tax law, states that all those who declared Income Tax are entitled to a refund. The calculation is made automatically by the Federal Revenue, which deposits the amount into the account informed when declaring the IR.

“There are important points that need to be checked, which are the permitted deductions, which can influence this refund. They include, for example, medical expenses, education, dependents, contributions to Social and Private Security, among other things”, he informs.
