According to the document, from January to April this year, 1,331,940 companies were opened in Brazil. As a result, there are a total of 21 million active CNPJs in the country. Of this total, 93.7% are micro or small companies.

Also according to the study, 736,977 CNPJs were terminated in the first four months of the year. As a result, the balance was positive, at 594,963 companies.

“Total openings were 21.8% higher than in the previous quarter and 1.6% lower compared to the same period in 2022. bases”, informed the ministry.

In absolute numbers, São Paulo was the state with the most companies opened in the four-month period, followed by Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Bahia and Goiás. “Together, these states concentrate 75% of Brazilian companies”, details the survey.

“In terms of percentage growth, however, the states that advanced the most over the previous four-month period, the last one of 2022, were Tocantins (34.8%), Mato Grosso (32.9%), Rondônia (29.9%), Paraná (28.2%) and Roraima (27.1%)”, he adds.

Commerce and Services

Of the total number of companies opened in the country during the first four months of 2023, 83.8% are from the commerce and services sectors – the latter accounts for 59.5%.

The highlights were sales promotion activities; retail trade of clothing and accessories; document preparation and administrative support services; hairdressers, manicures and pedicures; and masonry works.

“The leadership of such activities is related to the fact that 80.4% of the records are from MEIs (individual micro-entrepreneurs). In the first quarter, 1,070,506 companies were opened in this spectrum, an increase of 25.4% compared to the previous quarter and a drop of 3.1% over the same period of 2022”, explains the MDIC.

average time

Regarding the average time taken to start a business, the observed result (1 day and six hours) represents a decrease of 10 hours compared to the same period in 2022.

The state where it was faster to register new companies was Sergipe. There, on average, it takes only 7 hours to start a business. The state with the longest delay was São Paulo (2 days and two hours).

“In relation to the capitals, Curitiba (PR) and Aracaju (SE) had the shortest opening time, with an average of just two hours. Belém do Pará took the most time (2 days and 22 hours), followed by the city of São Paulo (1 day and six hours)”, informed the MDIC.

According to the director of the Business Registration and Integration Department (Drei/MDIC), Amanda Souto, the consolidation of the average time in about 1 day shows the “assertiveness of the simplification measures for opening new companies” implemented by the federal government and by the states.

“With the progress in the standardization of procedures and flow in the 27 federative units, this indicator tends to fall even more, in addition to reflecting the progress in digitalization and automation of the procedures necessary to formalize new businesses”, said the director.
