National Civil Construction Index changes 0.17% in May and records a drop in materials

The National Civil Construction Index (Sinapi) changed 0.17% in May. The data points to a drop of 0.24 percentage points in relation to the April index (0.41%).

Sinapi also points out that the accumulated result in the last twelve months was 2.31%, a result that is below the 2.51% recorded in the immediately previous twelve months. In fact, the index for May 2023 was 0.36%.

The national cost of construction, per square meter, reached R$1,739.26 in May – whose value in April closed at R$1,736.37. In the amount, R$1,006.80 relates to materials and R$732.46 to labor.

With the lowest rate observed in the year, the share of materials showed a negative change in the month of May, being -0.05%. In this context, a drop of 0.16 percentage points was observed in relation to the previous month (0.11%). In relation to May 2023 (-0.24%), there was an increase of 0.19 percentage points.

The labor force recorded a drop in both April and May 2023. “The share of labor force, despite the disputes observed in the month, showed a variation of 0.46%, registering a drop in relation to both March and May the previous year”, highlights Sinapi manager, Augusto Oliveira.

Regional performance

The North region recorded the highest monthly variation in May, 0.34%, with an increase in 4 of its 7 states. The other Brazilian regions presented the following results:

  • Sul: -0.03%
  • Southeast: 0.06%
  • Northeast: 0.30%
  • Midwest: 0.32%

The state of Acre recorded the highest rate in May, 2.16%, followed by Maranhão and the Federal District, 1.88% and 1.60%.

“The influence of the share of labor in the aggregate index led Acre, Maranhão and the Federal District, locations that had collective agreements, to record the highest rates for May 2024”, highlights Augusto Oliveira.

Accumulated

From January to May (0.99%) the accumulated figures were: 0.50% (materials) and 1.68% (labor). Those accumulated in twelve months totaled 0.24% (materials) and 5.31% (labor).
