Official inflation drops to 0.23% in May and accumulates 2.95% this year

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), which measures official inflation in the country, was 0.23% in May this year. The rate is lower than that of last April (0.61%) and May 2022 (0.47%).

With the result, released in Rio de Janeiro, this Wednesday (7), by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the IPCA – the country’s official inflation – is 2.95% for the year. In 12 months, the accumulated index is 3.94%, below the 4.18% accumulated until April.

The main impact on May’s inflation came from the group of expenses, health and personal care, which recorded a 0.93% rise in prices, driven by items such as health plans (1.20%), personal hygiene items (1. 13%) and pharmaceutical products (0.89%).

Two groups of expenses showed deflation (falling prices) and avoided higher inflation: transport (-0.57%) and household items (-0.23%).

The behavior of transport was influenced by the drop in prices of airline tickets (-17.73%) and fuels (-1.82%) such as diesel oil (-5.96%), gasoline (-1.93%) and gas vehicle (-1.01%).

Food continued to register inflation (0.16%), but at a level below April (0.71%), due to the behavior of items such as fruit prices (-3.48%), soy oil (-7. 11%) and meat (-0.74%).
