Readjustment in the Health and Personal Care sector drives inflation in May
May inflation measured by the Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), which registered an increase of 0.23%, was driven by the health and personal care sector, with an increase of 1.20% in health plans, 1, 13% in personal hygiene items, 3.56% in perfumes and 0.89% in pharmaceutical products.

According to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) this Wednesday (7), the sector as a whole had a variation of 0.93%. Housing rose 0.67% and Personal expenses were 0.64% expensive in the month. Transport fell by 0.57% and Household Goods by 0.23%.

The drop in Transport was driven by the 17.73% drop in airline tickets and 1.82% in fuel, with a drop of 5.96% in diesel oil, 1.93% in gasoline and 1.01% in vehicular gas.

The group with the greatest weight in inflation is Food and Beverages, which became 0.16% more expensive in May, decelerating in relation to the 0.71% recorded in April. The biggest variations were in the price of tomatoes, which rose 6.65% in the month, after rising 10.64% in the previous period. Chocolate bars and bonbons fell from 0.22% in April to 3.15% in May.

In 12 months, the chicken egg accumulates high of 20.68%, the cheese is 12.90% more expensive and the long life milk rose 10.55%. Snacks away from home are 11.87% more expensive than a year ago. In the month, food away from home rose 0.58%. Soybean oil fell 7.11% in May and has accumulated a drop of 29.49% in 12 months.

The accumulated IPCA in 12 months stood at 3.94%, following the downward trend seen since June 2022, when the index was at 11.89%.

Among the capitals analyzed by the IBGE, Fortaleza recorded the highest change in the month, with a rise of 0.56% driven by gambling, which rose 12.18%, and residential electricity, which was 3.71% more expensive in the month. São Luís recorded deflation of 0.38%, with drops of 7.63% in whole chicken and 5.87% in gasoline.

INPC

According to the IBGE, the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) was 0.36% in May, decelerating in relation to the 0.53% recorded in April. The index accumulated in the year is 2.79% and in 12 months it reaches 3.74%. In May 2022, the rate was 0.45%.

The indicator measures inflation for families with an income of one to five minimum wages.

In this analysis, food products were 0.16% more expensive in May, after rising 0.61% in April. Non-food products increased by 0.43%.

By region, the INPC registered a drop of 0.33% in São Luís, and Belo Horizonte had the biggest increase in prices, of 79%, with a 25% increase in the urban bus fare.
