Retail trade sales grow 0.8% in March
Retail grew 1.5% in the quarterly moving average, 3.2% compared to March 2022, 2.4% in the year and 1.2% in the 12 months.
Despite the increase in the sector, four of the eight activities surveyed by the IBGE had a decrease from February to March: fabrics, clothing and footwear (-4.5%), other articles of personal and domestic use (-2.2%), books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-0.6%) and fuels and lubricants (-0.1%).
The supermarket, food, beverage and tobacco sector remained stable. The rise in retail was driven by just three segments: equipment and material for office, information technology and communication (7.7%), pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (0.7%) and furniture and home appliances (0.3 %).
“This increase of 0.8% represents the departure from stability in February to a result that we can consider as growth. In addition, when we look at the last three months together, we see a gain of 4.5% in relation to December of last year, the last month of decline”, explains the research manager, Cristiano Santos.
Nominal revenue from retail trade increased by 2.5% compared to February, 7% compared to March last year, 8.6% accumulated in the year and 12.6% accumulated in 12 months.
expanded retail
Expanded retail sales volume, which also includes construction materials and vehicles/parts, grew 3.6% from February to March, with increases of 3.7% in the activity of vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and 0 .2% in construction materials.
Expanded retail also showed growth rates of 8.8% compared to March last year and 3.3% in the accumulated result for the year. In the accumulated of 12 months, however, the sector presents a decrease of 0.2%.
The sector’s nominal revenue increased by 3.4% compared to February this year, 14% compared to March 2022, 10.2% accumulated in the year and 11.3% accumulated in 12 months.
