Services sector grows 1.1% in February, says IBGE
The services sector grew 1.1% in February 2023, compared to the previous month, when it recorded a 3% decline. Compared to February last year, the sector expanded by 5.4%, the 24th consecutive positive rate. The numbers are part of the Monthly Survey of Services (PMS), released this Thursday (27) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

In the first two months of 2023, there was an increase of 5.7%, compared to the same period of 2022. In 12 months, the indicator accumulates an increase of 7.8%.

Research manager Rodrigo Lobo said that the pace of services in the country continues to be guided by the performance of information technology and the transport sector. The researcher added that the most dynamic segments continue to perform well, while those most affected by the pandemic, especially those with face-to-face activities, have already overcome the long distance they had from the pre-pandemic period.

“In February, there was a recovery of part of the loss seen in January. The configuration of the service sector, therefore, does not change significantly in the first two months of 2023”, he added in an analysis published in the IBGE text.

Federation Units

Of the 27 Federation Units, 20 had growth in the volume of services in February and accompanied the 1.1% increase observed in the national result. Mato Grosso (7.7%) and Pernambuco (6.1%), followed by Pará (7.2%), Minas Gerais (0.8%) and Paraná (0.8%) represented the most significant impacts.

According to the manager, Mato Grosso’s performance can be explained by the weight of agribusiness, which transports production by land transport, which ends up strengthening road freight transport. In Pernambuco, the impetus in services came from the leasing of temporary labor.

The main negative influences in the month were São Paulo (-0.1%), Federal District (-1.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0.8%).

According to the IBGE, based on the indicators of the Monthly Survey of Services, it is possible to monitor the sector’s situation in the country, “investigating the gross revenue from services in formally constituted companies, with 20 or more employed persons, whose main activity is a service non-financial, excluding the areas of health and education”.
