States and municipalities create more fees for mining, a sector that loses revenue
The main mining indices declined in the first quarter of 2023, such as revenue, collection of charges and taxes, exports and mineral balance. State and municipal governments created more fees in the sector, which could undermine Brazil’s competitiveness on the international stage.

The CEO of the Brazilian Institute of Mining (IBRAM), Raul Julgmann, commented on the numbers presented in this period: “Looking at the quarter, we have sectoral numbers. How are we, what positions are we in? We had revenues of R$54.6 billion during the quarter, which means a reduction, as you can see, we had a reduction in terms of revenues, compared to the 1st quarter of 2022 with that of 2023, we had a drop ”, he pondered.

The summary of the sector’s numbers shows, in addition to the revenue of R$54.6 billion mentioned by Julgmann, more than 201 thousand direct jobs generated, more than 2 million jobs along the chain and in the market. In addition, 8.8 billion in total taxes and duties collected, R$1.49 billion collected from CFEM (Financial Compensation for Mineral Exploration), U$9.2 billion in exports, or 78.5 million tons.

state results

The state results were also commented by the CEO of IBRAM: “By state we also had a decrease in terms of the two main states, Minas Gerais and Pará. Minas Gerais, in terms of millions of revenues, drops from 25 to 21, and Pará from 21.3 to 18.8, so there is a reduction. The winner there is Bahia, which has a growth, the rest is practically at a certain reduction also in Mato Grosso, but I would say that they are variations”, he explained.

Technology by legal mining

On the occasion of the presentation of the figures for the first quarter of 2023, other innovations in the sector were also announced. An agreement with the Research Center for Responsible Mining at the University of São Paulo will streamline a new system developed by USP, WWF Brasil and the Igarapé Institute aimed at traceability of gold extracted by legal activity. The platform will point out good marketing practices and indicate whether the raw material comes from a socially and environmentally responsible mine.
