Typical Easter foods are 14.8% more expensive this year
One of the products that contributed to the increase in the price of the basket was cod, whose price rose 7.4% in the last 12 months, but onion led the way, with a 36.2% increase in the period.
Beers, which rose 10.9%, soft drinks (15.7%), potatoes (11.7%), rice (14.7%) %), bonbon (11.15%) and chocolate (10.2%). The only product in the basket that was cheaper in this comparison was croaker, which fell 7%.
According to the general director of Apas, Carlos Correa, the ideal is for consumers to research prices before shopping for Easter. “Each supermarket has a different negotiation with the industry. It is vital that consumers make their shopping list and research prices in as many stores as possible, taking full advantage of typical promotions at the time”, said Correa, in a note.
Easter is the second biggest sales date for the supermarket sector in Brazil, second only to Christmas.
This year, Apas estimates growth of 4.5% in Easter sales. The entity attributes this possible expansion of the sector to the slowdown in food prices, combined with the increase in the population’s income.
