Unemployment grows in 16 Federation units in the first quarter
The unemployment rate rose in 16 of the 27 units of the Federation in the first quarter of this year compared to the previous quarter. In the other 11 locations, the index was stable, according to data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD), released this Thursday (18).

The main increases were observed in Rio Grande do Norte (2.2 percentage points, when changing from 9.9% to 12.1%), Roraima (2.1 percentage points, when changing from 4.6% to 6.8 %), Pernambuco (1.8 percentage points, when changing from 12.3% to 14.1%) and Ceará (1.8 percentage points, when changing from 7.8% to 9.6%).

Other states with increases were: Tocantins, Piauí and the Federal District (with growth of 1.7 percentage points); Pará and Maranhão (1.6 percentage points); Mato Grosso (1.5 percentage points); Alagoas (1.3 percentage points); Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul (1 percentage point); São Paulo (0.8 percentage point); Mato Grosso (0.7 percentage point); and Santa Catarina (0.6 percentage points).

The highest rate in the first quarter of 2023, however, was observed in Bahia (14.4%). The state was one of 11 that maintained stability, along with Amapá, Sergipe, Rio de Janeiro, Paraíba, Amazonas, Acre, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Paraná and Rondônia. The latter, incidentally, has the lowest unemployment rate in the country (3.2%).

According to research analyst Alessandra Brito, the increase in unemployment and the fall in occupation, which occurred simultaneously, resulted in a growth in the rate in the major regions, as well as in the national result (whose rate rose from 7.9% to 8 .8%).

“After a year of 2022 of recovery in the post-pandemic labor market, in 2023, it seems that the seasonal movement of increased unemployment at the beginning of the year is returning to the pattern of the historical series”, said the researcher.

Income

According to the survey, in the first quarter, the average usual income in the country was estimated at R$ 2,880, remaining stable in comparison with the previous quarter.

Among the federative units, only three had a high: Alagoas (5.3%), Maranhão (5%) and Minas Gerais (4.2%). Rio Grande do Sul was the only one to have a drop (-2.8%).
