Unemployment is higher among women and blacks, says IBGE

According to the survey, the unemployment rate among women was 10.8%, while among men the rate was only 7.2%. “The rate for women is 50% higher than for men. But we see that there was an increase in the rate for both women and men”, says IBGE researcher Alessandra Brito.

In the last quarter of 2022, the unemployment rate for women was 9.8% while that for men was 6.5%.

By color or race, the IBGE found that the unemployment rate in the first quarter of this year was 11.3% among self-declared blacks, 10.1% among browns and 6.8% among whites. .

“The higher unemployment rate among women and among black and brown people is a structural pattern in Brazil, which the survey ends up reflecting. These populations are also overrepresented in informality, compared to men and white people”, explains Alessandra.

A higher rate was also found for those with incomplete secondary education (15.2%). The lowest rate was found in people with complete higher education (4.5%). In the other levels of education, the rates were as follows: no education (6.7%), incomplete elementary school (8.7%), complete elementary school (10.1%), complete high school (9.9%) and incomplete higher education (9.2%).

In the analysis of age groups, younger people face greater difficulties in finding a job. From 18 to 24 years old, the vacancy rate is 18%. From 25 to 39 years old, the rate drops to 8.2%. In the range of 40 to 59 years old, it increases to 5.6%. And it reaches 3.9% among those over 60 years old.
