Unemployment rate registers a slight drop and remains at 8.5%, according to IBGE

According to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the unemployment rate in Brazil, ie the rate of people who are unemployed, is 8.5% in the month of April. It is lower than expected by the market, which was 8.7%. This level is stable, according to the IBGE, and corresponds to 9.1 million people. There is a slight decrease compared to the previous quarter, which was 8.8%.

The absolute number of unemployed people fell by 19.9% ​​compared to the same period last year, when the index recorded 2.3 million unemployed people.

The contingent of employed persons, corresponding to 98 million persons, decreased by 0.6% in relation to the previous quarter. This data corresponds to less 605 thousand people employed. However, the number of employed people grew by 1.6% compared to the same quarter of 2022, which represents 1.5 million more people in the labor market, compared to the same period last year.

The informality rate is 38.9% in the employed population and has decreased in relation to the last quarter and the previous year. The rate represents an absolute value of 38 million informal workers.

The real income registered in Brazil was stable, around R$ 2,891, and grew 7.5% compared to 2022.
