Weekly Consumer Price Index registered a variation rate of 0.45% in the second four weeks of May, points out FGV

The indicator, which measures weekly variation in the cost of living for families with income between 1 and 33 monthly minimum wages, has accumulated an increase of 3.23% in the last 12 months.

According to the survey, there was an increase in variation rates in some groups, including Education, Reading and Recreation (from -0.70% to -0.17%), Transport (from 0.57% to 0.74% ) and Miscellaneous Expenses (from 0.14% to 0.16%).

It is worth highlighting that, within the expense category, the two items that showed the greatest variation were air tickets (from -5.08% to -1.68%) and transportation via app (from 0.20% to 4.91%) .

Floods

For economist José Luiz Pagnussat, former president of Corecon-DF, the floods that hit Rio Grande do Sul contributed to this variation in the indicator.

“You also have a problem with reducing the supply of several other products. Rio Grande do Sul is responsible for almost 20% of pork production, responsible for chicken production, almost 10%. The reduction in supply will affect the price of these products for the consumer, and this is reflected in inflation”, he explains.

He explains that FGV’s IPC-S has been showing a growth trajectory in recent weeks, despite coming in at a lower level than the official inflation index, the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA).

“Instead of continuing on a downward trajectory because of the IPCA, there is a tendency to start to reflect price increases because of the problems we will have with supply in Brazil, of many products”, he adds.

On the other hand, the groups Food (from 0.95% to 0.66%), Clothing (from 0.07% to -0.15%), Health and Personal Care (from 0.81% to 0.75% ), Communication (from 0.59% to 0.50%) and Housing (from 0.28% to 0.26%) recorded a decrease in their rates of change.
